Yom Hazikaron across Australia 2013

Thousands across Australia attended commemoration events for Yom Hazikaron, the day of remembrance for fallen soldiers and victims of terror, at events organised by state Zionist Councils.

“It is of course sad that so many in our community have stories and memories of Israeli friends and family who lost their lives building and defending the State of Israel,” said Philip Chester, President of the Zionist Federation of Australia. “It is, however, very important that we pay respect those who gave their lives by commemorating Yom Hazikaron, and the fact that this commemoration has become so much larger in the last few years speaks volumes of our community’s wish to honour their memories.”

In each ceremony, friends and family members of those who were lost lit candles in their memory.

PM Gillard’s Yom Ha’atzmaut Message 2013

PM GillardOn behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, I extend congratulations and good wishes to the people and Government of Israel on the celebration of Yom Haatzmaut – Independence Day.

Israel is 65 years young, even as the State fulfils a dream of faith and rebirth that is over 3000 years old.

We cherish Israel as a democracy in a region facing profound upheaval. It is a society, as I have noted previously, based on liberty, justice and peace and which has guaranteed freedom of religion, language and culture to all its people.

Loyalty of Australian-Israelis shouldn’t be doubted

Philip Chester, ZFA PresidentThe suggestion that the tragedy of Ben Zygier’s death was caused by a conflict of loyalty inherent in Australian-Israelis is deeply offensive, writes Philip Chester.

This article originally appeared on ABC Drum Online.

Much media reporting surrounding the tragic suicide of Ben Zygier has been driven by unsubstantiated conjecture and rumour.

Commentators can’t resist the temptation to guess who did what. The speculation has now extended to disturbing suggestions of Jewish disloyalty – evoking age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Leslie Cannold on The Drum raises the question of how the Australian Jewish leadership should respond to “questions about Jewish Australian loyalty” which according to her could be “certainly” understood to arise from the Prisoner X case as if loyalty to Australia and Israel are mutually exclusive.

In fact, the opposite is true. Being loyal to Australia and to Israel is an easy fit. Australians and Israelis share common values.

Both nations pride themselves on their robust democracies, free speech and media, and independent legislature and judiciary. Both peoples share common interests – education and culture, sport and a love of each country’s natural geographic beauty.

The relationship of the Jewish people to the land of Israel is millennial and for most Jews the state of Israel is a central part of their Jewish identity.

History, culture and the nationhood of the Jewish people converge in that tiny strip of land. Since the formation of the state in 1948, millions of Jews from around the world, including many thousands from Australia, have made the decision to emigrate to Israel (in Hebrew, make “Aliyah”), not because they rejected Australia but rather to fulfil the dream of living as Jewish people in a democratic and free Jewish homeland.

As a multicultural society, Australia has long recognised and accepted that its citizens have the right to hold dual nationality. Many Australians enjoy the rights and privileges of citizenship of other countries by reason of birth or the nationality of their parents or grandparents. For most Australians who have migrated to Israel, this is a much appreciated privilege and the assumption of Israeli citizenship has not detracted at all from their pride in or identification with Australia.

Australians in Israel generally continue to maintain strong links to Australia and take great pride in Australia’s impact on their upbringing and the contributions that they have made to Australian society.

Just as migrants to Australia from many countries continue to celebrate the cultures of their homelands – sometimes for generations after their ancestors moved here – Australians in Israel celebrate their Australian identity in events as diverse as Australia Day barbies, Grand Final parties and avid attention to events that impact on Australia.

Despite the distance, Australian-Israelis tend to return home to Australia frequently, maintaining relationships and contact with family and friends here. Likewise Israelis who have migrated to Australia maintain an avid interest in what happens in and to Israel, just as migrants from Italy, Greece, Lebanon and Syria maintain their interest and concern for the lands of their birth.

Australia and Israel are strong allies, and relationships built on the battlegrounds of the two World Wars underscore the enduring nature of the friendship and shared values. In a geopolitical sense, despite the vast distances, Israel and Australia are close. Our abhorrence of terror and commitment to Western democracy make the alliance firm and natural.

Bilateral trade, partnerships in medical, scientific and environmental research among other examples underscore this historically strong relationship between the two nations.

Cannold refers to the fact that the Zionist Federation of Australia has assisted more than 10,000 Australian Jews emigrate to Israel. Yes, that’s right, 10,000 in the last 65 years, who have made a decision based on family ties, career opportunities, religious or ideological belief – in fact, any of myriad reasons why an individual may choose to change their country of residence.

There is no dissonance here – no reason why someone emigrating to Israel should be considered any less loyal to Australia than someone emigrating to any other place in the world.

During the ABC interview referred to by Cannold, I made these points and said the Zionist Federation of Australia was never told about or involved with any cases of misuse of Australian passports. Indeed, as I said, we fully expect all emigrants to comply with Israeli and Australian laws and that it was perfectly appropriate for the Australian Government to investigate any alleged breach of Australian passport regulations.

We do not know the facts or details around Ben Zygier’s death or the circumstances leading to it. To suggest that this tragedy was brought on by inherent conflicts of loyalty and identity casts dangerous and unwarranted aspersions on the entire Jewish community.

There should be absolutely no doubt that the fundamental loyalties of Australian Jews and dual nationality Australian-Israelis to both homeland and birthplace remain solid, balanced and totally compatible.

Philip Chester is the president of the Zionist Federation of Australia and has headed the Zionist Federation of Australia since 2006.

Statement by ZFA President, Philip Chester

20 February 2013

Philip Chester, ZFA PresidentZFA President Phillip Chester today described as “totally uninformed and mischievous” claims by some media commentators that the purpose of Israel-experience programs supported by community organisations is to recruit Australian Jews to serve in Israel’s intelligence organisations. “Contrary to the assertions of these commentators, these programs are aimed at educating Jewish youth about their heritage and about contemporary Israel, and have nothing to do with recruiting people for intelligence organisations.

“Some Australian Jews decide to emigrate to Israel (known in Hebrew as “Aliyah”) because they consider Israel central to their Jewish identity. Australia and Israel share many common values. Australians in Israel generally continue to maintain strong links to Australia and take great pride in Australia’s impact on their upbringing and the contribution that they made to Australian society.

Advocacy Alert: Aussie involved in Hezbollah bus bombing

7 February 2013

Last July, six people, including five Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver were killed, and over 30 others wounded in a bomb attack on a bus carrying Israelis from the airport to their hotel in Burgas, Bulgaria.

At the time, Israeli leaders immediately pointed the finger at Hezbollah, particularly given that fact that just a week or so earlier a Swedish national of Lebanese origin was detained in Cyprus on suspicion of tracking the movements of Israeli tourists. Officials from Cyprus believed that there were similarities between the behaviour of the suspect, and the terrorist attack in Bulgaria. Prime Minister Netanyahu declared that he had “rock-solid” intelligence that Hezbollah, back by Iran, was responsible. Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman also declared that “Hezbollah terrorists undertook this attack, aided by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards”.

Very little has been reported on the issue until this week, when Bulgarian investigators revealed that an Australian and a Canadian were involved in the attack. Both are believed to be involved with Hezbollah and have been living Continue reading »

AUKMIN reaction

22 January 2013

Philip Chester, ZFA PresidentThe Zionist Federation of Australia endorses Australian and British foreign affairs chiefs’ statement of support of a two-state solution, and, consistent with this statement, calls on the Palestinian leadership to return to the negotiating table with Israel rather than continue its unilateral steps in order to avoid dealing with Israel.

The status of Israeli settlements is still to be determined under international law; however, if the Palestinians are prepared to negotiate without preconditions, the settlements will be an issue to be resolved.

Philip Chester
President, Zionist Federation of Australia

United Kingdom and Australia

The Australian Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Bob Carr and Stephen Smith, and the UK Foreign and Defence Secretaries, William Hague and Philip Hammond, met 18 January for the fifth Australia-UK Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN).

AUKMIN statement about Israel:
We agreed that there is a particularly urgent need at this time for progress on the Middle East Peace Process. The UK and Australia call on the US to lead a major effort in 2013 to achieve a negotiated two-state solution with a secure Israel alongside a Palestinian state. History has shown that only the US has the influence and capability to bring both sides together. Past progress has only been achieved through US leadership. Strong US engagement is in the interests of Israelis, Palestinians and the wider region. Resolution of the Israeli Palestinian conflict will strengthen the forces of democracy and moderation throughout the Middle East. The Palestinian Authority and the new Israeli government must engage seriously in negotiations without preconditions. Actions by both sides must be in the interests of peace. Neither side should create obstacles to that objective. We call on Israel to stop settlement activity. All settlements are illegal under international law and settlement activity undermines the prospects for peace. Australia and the United Kingdom expressed particular concern regarding the recent settlement announcements of the Israel Government including the proposed development of the E1 area.

Australia and the United Kingdom both voted not to oppose enhanced Palestinian status in the United Nations. We call on the Palestinian Authority to exercise restraint and avoid provocative actions at international forums. Australia and the United Kingdom urge the Palestinians to resolve their internal differences, unite for peace and cease acts of violence against Israel. In particular, we call for the Palestinians to abide by the terms of the Gaza ceasefire and to stop all rocket attacks.

Leaders converge for ZFA Biennial

Federation marking 85th year

Zionist Federation of AustraliaMELBOURNE — More than 120 Australian Zionist leaders will deliberate, debate and discuss contemporary Zionist issues and Zionist identity at the ZFA’s 45th Biennial Conference, 11 November in Melbourne.

Among the highlighted activities will be Israeli commentator and author David Hazony leading two workshop-discussions about Zionist and Jewish identity in the Diaspora, an address by Israel Ambassador Yuval Rotem, and a panel with three columnists and editors from leading Australian national newspapers.

Elections for Zionist Federation of Australia leadership will also take place at the Biennial. Philip Chester, who has been ZFA President since 2006, announced that he plans to run for his fourth two-year term.

“We have a vibrant and diverse community that wishes to remain engaged with Israel and Zionism, but also to debate and discuss the challenges associated with this connection,” Chester said. “The ZFA is proud to bring together so many diverse thoughts and people who hail from the wide spectrum of Zionist beliefs in order to further enhance and support Zionism in Australia.

“Zionist thought has shifted tremendously since I was a youth movement leader; however, I believe that the Zionist passion of our community remains,” Chester said. “All organisations want to engage young adults, and we are glad to have such a successful working relationship with the groups that are breeding these future leaders.”

Hazony, whose writing has appeared in multiple international publications and websites, is a contributing editor to The Jewish Daily Forward and served as editor-in-chief of leading public affairs journal Azure. American-born, he has observed and written about the growing shifts among Jews living in different parts of the world.

The media panel, titled “Perceptions of Israel in the Media,” will feature former The Age editor Michael Gawenda, Melbourne’s Herald Sun executive editor and columnist Alan Howe, and Australian Financial Review international editor Tony Walker. It will be moderated by Dan Goldberg, columnist for Ha’aretz and JTA, and former editor at the Australia Jewish News.
