Will the Stephen Hawking boycott of Israel lead to peace in the Middle East?

13 May 2013

By Emily Gian

Many of you would have read last week of a decision by renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking to join the academic boycott of Israel by pulling out of the upcoming 2013 President’s Conference in Jerusalem.

The conference, run under the auspices of President Shimon Peres and now coming into its fifth year, assembles world leaders, international scholars, activists, poets and scientists, artists and clergy, entrepreneurs, economists and industrialists, as well as representatives of the next generation of leaders. Each year, Palestinians have also featured at the conference, including members of the Palestinian Authority. Continue reading »

Israel from the ground up

Unique cultural aspects to be presented by author, commentator David Hazony

David HazonyIndividuals’ relationships with Israel are complex and unique, but there are certainly generalities which define groups and generations. Just as Israel’s economy has transformed from largely agricultural to one based on technology, science and intellectual endeavour, so has the dominant perception of Israel morphed from the kibbutz lifestyle as an exemplar of equality and egalitarianism to a more high-tech, culturally creative one.

The paradox of this culturally vibrant, creative and productive nation thriving in an environment where it faces geo-political and security challenges is a critical discussion for Israelis and diaspora Jews alike, and it is one of the themes that the Zionist Federation of Australia’s guest speaker David Hazony will be exploring during his November Australian visit.

Hazony is a contributing editor to the Jewish Daily Forward, and he was the former editor-in-chief of Azure magazine of the Shalem Centre. In his writing he has a broad repertoire of topics around the relationship of Israel and the Diaspora, Culture and Zionism.

“Israelis have secretly transitioned from poorly importing much of their cultural life to unselfconsciously striking out on their own, compiling and recombining and remixing and creating until things are produced that are not ‘Zionist’ or even ‘Israeli,’ but just whatever they are, amazing new expressions of human and machine and creative and artistic and bold,” Hazony wrote in a 9 April 2012 piece on the Forward.

Hazony is the featured speaker at the ZFA’s 45th Biennial Conference, Nov. 11, in Melbourne, and he will deliver interactive presentations to myriad community groups in Sydney and in Melbourne from 7-13 November. Click for more information about his public events

“The ZFA is proud to bring such a highly respected, esteemed writer and Zionist thinker to the community,” said ZFA President Philip Chester. “David will bring to our community a contemporary take on the perennial issues – how we relate to Israel, what Israel means to us in the Diaspora and how we can improve our relationship. Whilst David has serious academic and literary credentials, he will explore these and other issues in an interactive and engaging way – as befits our times.”

Herzlian dreaming

Australian Zionist leadership converges on Jerusalem

The newly opened Herzl Education Centre saw 20 Australian Zionist community leaders converged for an intensive and fascinating two day leadership conference on 18-19 June.

Nir BarkatThe Zionist Federation of Australia, together with the World Zionist Organisation, presented a smorgasbord of speakers on contemporary issues in Israel.

Highlights of the program included
• Exposition and exploration of issues of Religion and State.
• Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon discussing the strategic threats facing Israel.
• A panel on Israel’s place in the media comprising Josef Federman of the Associated Press and Gil Hoffman of the Jerusalem Post. The panelists and participants enjoyed a candid and refreshing discussion, “off the record” of course.
• Mark Regev, PM Netanyahu’s spokesman and ex Australian, spoke on his perspective on media and government.
• Talia Gorodess of the Reut Institute presented a fascinating analysis of the challenges and issues relating to Israeli communities in the diaspora.
• An intimate forum with Rav Rafi Feuerstein was followed by a discussion on Zionist Leadership in our Generation presented by Academic and contemporary Zionist thinker Gil Troy.
• Chair of Diaspora Activities of the WZO and conference host, Gusti Yehoshua Braverman, presented a challenge to Australian Zionist leadership in terms of engaging with Israelis in our community.

Conference participants were joined on Monday evening by 150 Australian olim for a brilliant program which featured a panel of eminent Australian-Israelis – Isi Leibler, Tal Becker and DJ Schneeweiss – speaking on contemporary Israel issues as well as reflecting on their aliya experience. Dinner on the balcony of the Herzl Centre was a vibrant and exciting series of reunions, as Aussies reconnected. The evening program included keynote addresses by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, and social protest organiser, Stav Shafir.

“The ZFA is committed to enhancing the Israel connection with Australia on every level” said ZFA President Philip Chester. “This seminar exposed our existing and emerging leaders to a brilliant program of speakers and engaged them in discussions on a range of contemporary issues facing Israel and Zionism today. The close cooperation and support from the Diaspora Activities Department of the World Zionist Organisation in the program underscores our strong relationship and further enhances our activities on the ground in Australia.”

StandWithUs/ZFA/AZYC Israel advocacy seminar immerses shnat

Gap-year participants in Israel engage with plethora of experts during the 3-day “Israel in Focus-Australia” advocacy seminar

Geo-strategic tour with Miri Eisin overlooking Jerusalem

They came to Israel out of both curiosity and love. For most of them, their love has only increased as they have known Israel through multiple experiences by volunteering, studying, learning, meeting new people, talking Hebrew, eating, and, for 58 young Australians, becoming advocates to speak in support of Israel in a world that many many fear is becoming increasingly vitriolic toward the Jewish homeland.

On 15-17 April, 58 participants from shnat underwent the first part of “Israel in Focus-Australia,” an advocacy seminar sponsored and organised by StandWithUs, Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) and Australasian Zionist Youth Council (AZYC). The 58 participants came from the long-term gap year programs Israel by Choice, AUJS Aviv and Australian Zionist youth movement shnat programs (Betar, Bnei Akiva, Habonim Dror, Hineni and Netzer).

“I don’t think that even the most optimistic of us expected such a great success,” said ZFA Israel Programs Director Yigal Sela. “We were very fortunate for the quality, dedication and hard work not only from the organisations and speakers who planned and led the seminars, but also from the participants. This wouldn’t have been possible without so many people, most especially the leadership of Michelle Rojas-Tal from StandWithUs and Reuben Bolaffi of AZYC in supporting the ZFA. Moreover, we couldn’t have asked for a better calibre of young advocates: They have unbelievable enthusiasm, energy, thoughtfulness and intelligence, all of which augurs well for the Australian Jewish community. Coming from different groups, they compose a cosmopolitan force to defend Israel in different places and for different audiences.”

In all, 12 expert speakers informed the participants about a wide range of issues, including a brief history of Israel territory and maps, multiple inside views of Palestinian society, a geo-strategic tour of Jerusalem, international legal issues. Speakers included McGill University Professor Gil Troy; Ministry of Foreign Affairs legal expert Sarah Weiss-Maudi; former Israeli spokeswoman and retired Col. Miri Eisin; and Prime Minister’s Spokesman Mark Regev, who is originally from Australia.

“We’re really excited about this seminar because it is an important part of their time in Israel and a very important part when they come back to Australia as well,” said AZYC Chairperson Reuben Bolaffi. “The skills and knowledge they are learning on this seminar are invaluable as bogrim of the movement: Being in a youth movement and having ideologies, they know what it’s like to believe in something and stand up for what they believe. When they come back to Australia they will be confronted by the BDS [Boycott and Divestment Sanctions] and de-legitimisation of Israel. The seminar really gives them an opportunity to learn how to respond, and we’re very proud and excited for them to learn.”

During the second round of “Israel in Focus-Australia,” which is scheduled for May (IBC and Aviv) and September (AZYC), the young advocates will be trained to respond to specific types of groups and claims made about Israel.

“We are delighted to partner with the Zionist Federation of Australia and the Australasian Zionist Youth Council to bring this seminar to the Australian community,” said Michelle Rojas-Tal, StandWithUs’s Director of Diaspora Education. “My greatest passion for teaching comes from the overwhelming emotion I receive when I am able to teach, learn and share with a new group of talented and dedicated young adults, and it was a pleasure getting to know all of the participants over the three days they were here, and I look forward to continuing my work with them in the next seminar.”

Next Year in Israel!

Israel Program Information Nights for 2013

Pesach is over, so now it is time to think about Hashanah ha’ba’ah b’yerushalyim: spending next year in Jerusalem or Tel-Aviv or Haifa or anywhere else in Israel.

“Parents need to start thinking about gap year programs for their teenager not only because there are so many different options for programs but also because there are administrative needs – such as filling paperwork and setting up visas and passports – not to mention, and most importantly for parents, applying for grants and scholarships. Deadlines pop up quickly, so it’s important to get on the ball soon,” said ZFA Israel Programs Director Sarah Myerowitz.

The information sessions will provide a broad overview of the available Israel Programs and answer questions about Masa Grants and Scholarships. Programs include traditional gap-year programs such as the Shnat program through the Zionist youth movements, Israel by Choice (IBC) and AUJS Aviv; career training programs in all different fields; volunteering opportunities; religious and academic study programs; and more. The ZFA Israel Programs team is also glad to see other major gap-year programs relaunched this year geared toward Australians: the Maccabi Sports Leadership Program and Hebrew University.

“With so many formal programs, we are confident to offer a program for nearly every interest – whether he or she is doing a gap-year before studying, launching a career, taking a break in his or her 20s, and so on,” Myerowitz said.

Information nights are scheduled for 7:30 PM on the following dates
• 2 May, Melbourne: Beth Weizmann, 306 Hawthorn Road, Caulfield South
• 7 May, Perth: Perth Hebrew Congregation, Freedman Road, Menora
• 14 May Sydney (East): Shalom College, ECLC, UNSW, Kensington
• 15 May Sydney (North): Masada College, 9-15 Link Road, St. Ives.

The ZFA is the Australian representative for Masa Israel, the umbrella framework enabling Jewish young-adults aged 17-30 to spend from 5-10 months in Israel on more than 200 different Israel programs.

Young adults enthused by short-term programs

Participant numbers on Academy, Taglit-Birthright increase from previous year

Yotum Mishter lights a community menorah in Tsfat on the last night of Hanukkah during the December 2011 Taglit Birthright Israel trip, for which the Zionist Federation of Australia and Chabad on Campus partnered. The 2011-12 summer season for Australian short-term programs to Israel ended with a massive increase from the year previously.

On 5 February, participants from the last summer Taglit Birthright Israel trip left Australian shores for Israel, rounding off one of the most successful years of Australian Israel short term program participation in recent history.

In total this season, there were 200 registered Birthright participants among 5 bus tours – compared with 120 during the 2010-11 summer. Birthright is a free 10-day tour of Israel, introducing young adults to Israel and their relationship to it as young Jews.

Meanwhile on 13 January, 82 participants ended the 5-week Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) Academy, an increase from 68 in 2010-11.

The ZFA partners with Taglit-Birthright and AUJS.

The participation increase for Academy and Birthright is happening simultaneously with the increased participation on long-term Israel programs, such as the year-long Shnat or other long term programs through MASA Israel Journey that are taking similarly aged young adults to Israel.

David Glass, Olga Lynn, Ryan Lewy and Rabbi Daniel Rabin stop their hike at Ein Gedi during the December Taglit Birthright Israel trip, for which the Zionist Federation of Australia and Chabad on Campus partnered.“It’s pretty exciting that so many young adults are interested in learning about and immersing themselves in Israeli culture and history,” said ZFA President Philip Chester. “These programs not only strengthen Zionism and support for Israel in our community, they also expose our young community to an eclectic mix of opinions, backgrounds and people.”

Academy is the flagship AUJS program that’s been around for 50 years; it’s a 5-week touring and volunteering program that is generally designed for school leavers or students in the first year or two or university. It’s a cornerstone program of the Australian Jewish community.

“It was the most amazing experience with a group of people that came together: To travel around Israel, to see Israel in depth, just to have a great time and enjoy the program and enjoy seeing the country,” said Jonathan Ruben, 18, a participant on Academy.

Although Jonathan graduated last year from a Jewish school, and he played soccer for Maccabi, he was passive towards Israel.

“In the past I wouldn’t argue if somebody else said something about Israel or if I saw something anti-Semitic, but now I feel an obligation to defend the Jewish people; you feel you need to defend your country,” Jonathan said. “That comes from my experience in Israel and my maturity. Hearing personal anecdotes from people around the country has changed my attitudes about what’s going on. In the newspapers, you don’t get that full perspective.”

Birthright is the free 10-day peer-educational tour of Israel facilitated between Taglit Birthright Israel and local community partners, which in Australia is the ZFA. It’s designed for participants 18-26 who haven’t been to Israel on an organised tour.

Rabbi Daniel Rabin was the madrich in December for a bus that the ZFA partnered with Chabad on Campus.

“The participants got a political appreciation of the country and a deeper connection to their religious side,” Rabbi Rabin said. “They got to see Israeli soldiers, and they saw that these kids are just like them, that they are just young guys who want to protect their country.”

Rabbi Rabin said that the optimism, positive attitude and interest during the tour was universal among all participants, despite few of them being friends before the trip and despite them coming with different purposes and backgrounds.

“You had a very big range of different backgrounds, personalities and universities. They came from Jewish schools, non-Jewish schools; traditional or not,” Rabin said. “They got to experience all aspects of the country in such a short time. They got the agricultural side, and they went all the way to the North. The excitement is still very strong, and the enthusiasm is definitely very alive.”
