The Zionist Federation of Australia mourns the passing of Yehuda Avner z”l

25 March 2015, For Immediate Release

The Zionist Federation of Australia mourns the death of former Israeli prime ministerial advisor and ambassador Yehuda Avner who passed away yesterday in Jerusalem aged 86.

Avner served as an advisor to Prime Ministers Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, and as a speechwriter for Golda Meir and Levi Eshkol. He documented his experiences working with these five Prime Ministers in the highly acclaimed 2010 memoir The Prime Ministers: An Intimate Narrative of Israeli Leadership, which served as a fascinating insight into the inner workings of a Prime Minister’s office during tumultuous times for the State of Israel.

Yehuda Avner will be remembered fondly by the Jewish Community in Australia having served as Ambassador from 1992-1995. During his time here, he was actively involved in communal life and was always available to offer support to the community. In Melbourne, he found his spiritual home at Mizrachi synagogue, where he spent Shabbatot whenever he visited.

ZFA President Dr Danny Lamm said, “Yehuda Avner was a man who carried himself with dignity and respect. He was intelligent and as a native English speaker, he was highly articulate and endeared himself to all who came in contact with him. He was a fantastic advocate of Israel and was admired by both sides of politics. The Israeli political sphere has lost one of its greats.”

The Zionist Federation of Australia sends their deepest condolences to his wife Mimi, his children and grandchildren. May his memory be a blessing.
