WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS
Convening of Zionist Congress
The World Zionist Congress takes place every 5 years, with the next one scheduled to take place in October 2020. Of course, it is possible that the format or timing may be adjusted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Zionist Federation of Australia is charged with managing the process by which the thirteen mandates allocated to Australia are distributed among established Zionist factions. In line with a specific, regulated process, defined within the World Zionist Organisation’s constitution and guidelines, a committee comprising representatives from the Zionist organisations who contest Congress seats is meeting to determine the process.
The first stage of the process is that each of the factions: ARZA, Ameinu, Australian Federation of Russian Jewry, Friends of Likud, Mercaz Masorti, Meretz and Mizrachi are collating their membership lists and will submit them to the ZFA by the end of May. Community members are encouraged to sign up as a member of whichever faction suits their values and political outlook and be part of the process to determine the composition of the Australian delegation to the Congress.
“The World Zionist Congress is a proud tradition dating back to Herzl’s first Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897. It brings together Zionists from across the globe, representing every shade of the political and religious spectrum, who gather to discuss, debate and resolve the policies and direction for the movement for the next 5 year period.” said ZFA Area Election Committee Chairman Philip Chester. “Despite the challenges brought upon us by Coronavirus this year, it’s encouraging to note the passion and enthusiasm of the Australian Zionist movement, represented by a diverse committee, to participating in this most important of forums”.
