This has been a fascinating story to follow and an interesting example of what not to do if you're trying to promote inclusivity! The story begins in Philadephia, where an organistion called "Eat Up the Borders" was due to run a "Taste of Home" festival which would feature food from different immigrant communities including a food truck called "Moshava", run by an Israeli-American chef. While Eat Up the Borders claims to "amplify the voices of immigrant, small and family owned restaurants", they cancelled the participation of Moshava because of apparent security threats. They wrote on their instagram "our mission at EUT is to uplift as many passionate small businesses as possible. We want to provide a platform where we can gather around a table to share history, culture, language, and most importantly, food. In order to best serve our guests, we decided to remove one of our food vendors from Sunday's event so that we could deliver an optimal experience to all. This decision came from listening to the community we wish to serve and love." They continued, "We do stand by initiative to give vendors from all nationalities a platform to showcase their talents and provide an awesome experience for all. We will continue to strive to provide opportunity to learn from one another over a nice dish." So basically - they want to provide a safe environment for all, unless you are Jewish. Eat Up the Borders must have really been feeling the backlash as they then deleted their Facebook and Instagram accounts (Instagram is now back up but set to "private"). Following the uproar, Sunflower Philly, another partner in the event posted that they had decided to cancel the event. They wrote, "at Sunflower Philly we truly believe in creating a positive and inclusive community space here in Philadephia. Due to the ongoing situation with one of our event partners @eatuptheborders and Moshava.Philly we have decided to cancel the "Taste of Home" event today. Sunflower Philly is a non-profit organisation created to bring our community together through art, music and sustainability. We will continue to host events with people of all races, nationalities and sexual orientations who are aligned with our mission." Outrageous that instead of standing up to the threats and promoting inclusivity, they chose to just shut down the entire event. Here, they missed a real opportunity to apologise for the blatant anti-Semitism and to show that they really believed in their own mission statement. Instead, the referred to it as an "ongoing situation", which sounds a little like victim-blaming to us. It will be interesting to see whether they apologise, backtrack or just completely ignore the issue moving forward, but either way, both Eat Up the Borders and Sunflower Philly have behaved disgracefully. A simple apology and a pledge to do better doesn't seem that difficult, and usually isn't, unless Israel and the Jewish community seem to be involved. Would this whole debacle have happened (and played out in the way that it did) if it was any other group? We all know the answer to that.
