Rosh Hashanah Message from
Dr Danny Lamm, President
I wish to extend warm Rosh Hashanah greetings to the Australian Jewish community on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, 5777.
I write my Rosh Hashanah message in Israel following my eldest son’s wedding in Jerusalem, a city that is buzzing with building, development and tourism of Jews and Christians.
At the wedding we sang:
עוד ישמע בהרי יהודה ובחוצות ירושלים
קול ששון וקול שמחה
(Yet again there shall be heard… in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem.
The voice of joy and the voice of gladness.)
We sang for the chatan and kallah but also for Jerusalem and all of Israel.
For a new year of health, happiness, growth and security for our people.
I’m enthused by Israel’s efforts in so many endeavours such as; Minister of Education Naftali Bennet’s convening of OECD Ministers of Education today and of Australian Ambassador Dave Sharma spearheading OzIsrael.
As we travel through the Shomron we see our developed communities of Shilo Eli and Psagot all optimistically preparing for Rosh Hashanah and the future.
The start of the Jewish New Year is the perfect time for introspection and reflection. It gives us time to consider the accomplishments and challenges over the past year both within the Australian Zionist movement and in Israel.
The year to date has been one of change, initiative and development, both in Australia and in Israel, but also a period of tremendous challenge.
The place of Israel in the global arena, and our responses to these challenges, have been a prime object of concern for the Zionist movement in Australia and worldwide.
Notwithstanding these challenges, Israel continues to lead the world in the fields of technology, health, agriculture and the arts.
The Australian connection to Israel is strengthened through our Israel programs, our partnership with the Arava and the Golan, the successful continuation of the world renowned Diller Fellows Program, Habayit – the home of Hebrew language and Israeli culture and the incredible group of shlichim that form our Australian mishlachat.
Here in Australia we are blessed with our extensive Jewish day school system, we have our seven Zionist youth movements, a broad range of synagogues, incredible professional communal organisations and representation. We have a strong and supportive government and some responsible active Jewish parliamentarians. We are a fortunate nation and we don’t forget that.
Our Israel advocacy efforts respond to misinformation and disinformation about Israel in the media and also strategically presents positive messages about Israel. We have made sure that our unwavering support for the safety and security of all citizens of the State of Israel is always on display and we will continue to do so in the future.
On behalf of the Zionist Federation of Australia, may I wish the entire Australian Jewish community Shana tova umetuka, ktiva v’chatima tova. May the New Year 5777 bring peace, security and prosperity to the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Dr. Danny Lamm
