The Zionist Federation of Australia welcomes the appointment of Jillian Segal AO as special envoy to combat antisemitism. It reflects the Australian Government’s recognition of the dramatic rise in antisemitism in Australia.
Ms Segal has long been an advocate for the Australian Jewish community, and her appointment as special envoy is timely, given the spike in antisemitism we’ve seen over the last nine months.
The special envoy role will be an important complement to the Australian Government’s adoption of the IHRA working definition of antisemitism. Ms Segal will be in prime position to call out antisemitism as defined by the government’s chosen definition, and to suggest policies to combat this scourge.
The Jewish community backs the establishment of a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on university campuses, and looks forward to working with Ms Segal on this and other ways to combat antisemitism in Australia.
