New ZFA President Dr Danny Lamm welcomes Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's comments from ZFA Biennial Conference

For Immediate Release               Monday 7 April 2014 The Zionist Federation of Australia held its Biennial Conference on Sunday 30 March, at which Philip Chester retired after 8 outstanding years of leadership and Dr Danny Lamm was elected unopposed as President. Danny comes to the organisation with a deep engagement with Jewish community leadership, having led major Australian Jewish organisations as well as holding key roles with the World Zionist Organisation and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Statement from ZFA President Philip Chester on the intercepted Iranian arms

Tuesday 11 March 2014 The Zionist Federation of Australia strongly condemns the shipment of dangerous weapons that Iran attempted to smuggle into the Gaza Strip last week. Disguised as a shipment of cement, it contained 180 heavy mortars, 400,000 bullets and dozens of M-302 rockets that have the capability of striking almost anywhere in Israel and was about to find its way into the hands of those who have repeatedly warned of their desire to do so, even at civilian targets.

ZFA President,Philip Chester, official statement on 4 Corners/ The Australian joint campaign

The Four Corners program aired on ABC was highly emotive and one-sided. It only depicted the allegations in line with the Palestinian position but made absolutely no attempt to report the facts presented to the court or the difficult legal realities on the ground.
 The disputed territories have many legal, social and moral complexities with which Israel is continually trying to grapple. John Lyons and Four Corners did not acknowledge these difficulties in dealing with Palestinian "child terrorists" who are caught throwing rocks. Lyons' attempt to belittle the lethal repercussions of this terrorist activity proves that this investigation is partial. The issue of the treatment of Palestinian juveniles in the military court system raises a more fundamental question of child abuse. Why have these teenage boys been recruited to participate in armed conflict?  Should they not be attending school, instead of being exploited to use rocks as dangerous weapons, often with deadly repercussions? A Palestinian elder recruiting their own son in terrorist activities signifies abuse of the highest order. Lyons' attempt to belittle the lethal repercussions of this terrorist activity proves that this investigation is partial.

ZFA President, Philip Chester, makes a statement on the death of former Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel

Sharon z"l.

 

The Zionist Federation of Australia mourns the passing of Ariel Sharon one of the last remaining founding fathers of the state of Israel, a man who made a major contribution to the state of Israel as a soldier, politician and Prime Minister.

Born in 1928 the former Prime Minister's history in Israel began prior to the establishment of the state. Joining the Haganah at the age of 14 his past was intertwined with the founding of Israel's independence.

Former PM, Ariel Sharon, was an exceptional soldier who dedicated his life to protecting Israel and its citizens. He founded and led the "101" special commando unit which carried out retaliatory operation against terrorist groups as well as serving as a commander in the 1948 War of Independence and the 1967 Six Day War. During the 1973 Yom Kippur War Sharon led the crossing of the Suez Canal which brought about victory in the war and subsequent peace with Egypt.

Response to Galus Australia article critiquing the ZFA

  Recently, there have been some accusations flying around about the ZFA, stemming from an advocacy update published last week, and it seems apt to respond. My role at the ZFA is to provide food for thought on topical issues as they present themselves in the media and other forums.  In doing so I try to reflect the views of the vast majority of Australian Jewry who identify themselves with Zionism. The bulletin does not purport to speak for each and every member of the community.
