As part of Israel by Choice, a long-term Israel program mostly for school-leavers on a gap year, participants must choose a place to volunteer for part of their program. Multiple options are available to them.During their volunteering, they usually work with others on their program and sometimes meet volunteers from across the world. They also work closely with the Israeli staff.

“It’s a really interesting way to get to know Israel from the inside,” said IBC Program Director Gabi Grabin. “It’s getting to know Israelis that choose a line of work that is hard every day. … It’s important to understand that these places won’t stop working. They bring such an interesting and fun vibe to these places. It just changes these places and brings a whole new light.”

IBC Kfar NachmanVolunteers are given a variety of options that fit their interests. “We try to get a large variety of different places or would answer to needs, if it’s working with kids, adults or animals,” Grabin said. “We’re always open for new options as well. Giving it a try is a key. Sometimes you come to a place, and it looks like it’s not something where you want to be.”

Sophie Davies, from Melbourne, was volunteering at the Agam School, for people aged 6-21 who have disabilities. “It was a good place to help and see what day-to-day life is for people I would have never seen before,” Davies said. “In my class they don’t speak, but I can already see their personalities, and have made a connection to them.”

Daniel Edelman, from Melbourne, volunteered at Shikma, a village for people with retardation. “At this place, you can see a difference that you’re actually making,” Edelman said. “They learn your names, and they get excited when you come. It is hard, but fulfilling at the same time.”

Jessie Goldberg, from Sydney, chose Leket, Israel’s national food bank, where she could be hands-on and have a direct vision of her accomplishments.”You can see the effect you have. You can see at the end of the day 10 crates or 20 crates – that’s what I’ve done,” Goldberg said. “You know that it’s going to go to some place where it’s going to go to good use.”

Next Year in Israel!

Israel Program Information Nights for 2013

Pesach is over, so now it is time to think about Hashanah ha’ba’ah b’yerushalyim: spending next year in Jerusalem or Tel-Aviv or Haifa or anywhere else in Israel.

“Parents need to start thinking about gap year programs for their teenager not only because there are so many different options for programs but also because there are administrative needs – such as filling paperwork and setting up visas and passports – not to mention, and most importantly for parents, applying for grants and scholarships. Deadlines pop up quickly, so it’s important to get on the ball soon,” said ZFA Israel Programs Director Sarah Myerowitz.

The information sessions will provide a broad overview of the available Israel Programs and answer questions about Masa Grants and Scholarships. Programs include traditional gap-year programs such as the Shnat program through the Zionist youth movements, Israel by Choice (IBC) and AUJS Aviv; career training programs in all different fields; volunteering opportunities; religious and academic study programs; and more. The ZFA Israel Programs team is also glad to see other major gap-year programs relaunched this year geared toward Australians: the Maccabi Sports Leadership Program and Hebrew University.

“With so many formal programs, we are confident to offer a program for nearly every interest – whether he or she is doing a gap-year before studying, launching a career, taking a break in his or her 20s, and so on,” Myerowitz said.

Information nights are scheduled for 7:30 PM on the following dates
• 2 May, Melbourne: Beth Weizmann, 306 Hawthorn Road, Caulfield South
• 7 May, Perth: Perth Hebrew Congregation, Freedman Road, Menora
• 14 May Sydney (East): Shalom College, ECLC, UNSW, Kensington
• 15 May Sydney (North): Masada College, 9-15 Link Road, St. Ives.

The ZFA is the Australian representative for Masa Israel, the umbrella framework enabling Jewish young-adults aged 17-30 to spend from 5-10 months in Israel on more than 200 different Israel programs.

About 340 Australian young adults aged 18-30 will be on long-term programs facilitated by the ZFA and supported by MASA Israel Journey in the 2011-12 season. About two-thirds of the participants are on gap-year programs, who are leaving within the next two weeks.

“The increasing numbers underscore how committed young Australians are to Israel. They have multiple options from which to choose, including the youth movement shnat programs, AUJS Aviv, Israel By Choice and up to 200 other choices, including studying in a yeshiva, professional internships, performing arts, environmental programs, university studies and many more. I’m thrilled that the ZFA’s Israel Programs department has been busier than ever this year.”said Philip Chester, President of the Zionist Federation of Australia. “We are proud to know that these 340 young adults will come back and take their place as active and engaged members of the Jewish community.”

A large number of teenagers, madrichim and family members gathered outside the International Terminal at the Melbourne Airport 30 January for a ceremony to send off youth group shnat participants from Melbourne. In all, 147 participants from across Australia and New Zealand from Betar, Benei Akiva, Habonim Dror, Hashomer Hatzair, Hineni and Netzer plan to get to Israel on 1 February.

Jaimie Chapman, Dani Arnold-Levy, Rebecca Neufeld and Amy Bortz, all Hineni madrichim, during the senf-off ceremony for shnat outside Melbourne Airport's International Terminal, 30 January 2012.“It’s great that so many of them are taking a year off, but what is more exciting is that they all committed to coming back to be leaders in the community for two years after they return,” said Reuben Bolaffi, Chairperson of Australasian Zionist Youth Council (AZYC). “Like so many others before them, they will have a phenomenal time and a life-defining experience, and they will come back ready to step in to lead others in a similar capacity.”

Eden Adler was leaving from Melbourne Airport 30 January for shnat with her youth group, Habonim Dror. While standing and talking with her friends and getting bombarded with hugs from her parents and program leaders, Adler’s smile was permanently fixed on her face. “I’m so excited for a fulfilling year,” Adler said. “I will be experiencing a different culture, and it will be amazing because you know that everybody there still shares many of the same things we do, that you know that everybody is going to Shabbat each Friday and it’s special. Israel feels like it will be home.”
