On Friday 18 August, ABC News changed a misleading headline on a news story regarding the terrorist attack which killed an Israeli security guard in Tel Aviv, following multiple complaints from Jewish and Zionist organisations.

The story was originally posted on Sunday 6 August, under the headline “Palestinian man killed in Tel Aviv shooting that leaves another critically injured” and now reads, “Palestinian shooting attack in downtown Tel Aviv kills Israeli security guard”, which more accurately reflects the true nature of the attack.

The ZFA welcomed the ABC’s correction of the appalling headline, but remains concerned.

ZFA President Jeremy Leibler said, “While it was proper for the ABC to change the headline, what is concerning is the total lack of acknowledgement of the clear breach in the ABC’s Code of Practice. The original headline manifestly misled readers as to the nature of the event. After reading the ABC’s explanation, we are still mystified how a supposedly impartial journalist could possibly think the headline was appropriate.”
